Nancy Wilson and Maisie Richardson

Nancy Wilson was born 20th February 1937 in Chillicothe, Ohio to Olden Wilson, a ironworker and Lillian Ryan (a former housemaid). Nancy was one of six children. Nancy was heavily influenced by her father's taste in music and the records that were played in her home. She already knew she would be a musician by the time she was 4 years old. She developed her talent by singing in the choir at church. She was a finalist on a talent show on TV in her 15th year and then began appearing regularly on the Tv show Skyline Melodies while still in high school. It was at that time that she began to work in night clubs at that same age. Nancy was 17 when she graduated highschool. After attending Ohio Central State College - now Central State University - for one term, Nancy left to be an experienced performer. In 1956 she released her debut album along with Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band. They performed together throughout 1956 until 1958. Nancy started recording with Dot Records in 1956, as part of the group. Cannonball Adderley told her to move in New York to further her professional career. She moved to The Big Town to begin her career in the year 1959. Within one month, she got a job singing at The Blue Morocco Night Club on Boston Road in The Bronx which was where her agent was introduced to her voice and agreed to sign her. A contract was formalized with Capitol Records in 1960. The year was 1960 when she debuted with the song. Guess Who? Capitol Records released 5 Nancy Wilson albums over a period of two years. In the era of Adderley, Wilson began concentrating on R&B but soon shifted to torch and jazz. Nancy Wilson, Cannonball Adderley together with their 1962 group helped her reach the top. The singer had her breakout smash Tell Me the Truth by 1963. The singer was offered a position at the New York's Coconut Grove nightclub, America's most prestigious nightclub.
