She was the daughter of iron worker Olden Wilson and the former Lillian Ryan who worked as a housekeeper. Nancy was the sixth of seven kids. Her father was a musician and would play records at home. It had a huge influence in her early years. When she was four, she knew she wanted to be a musician. She discovered her talent for music through participating in choirs of the church. When she won a talent contest on TV when she was 15 years old, she began to regularly appear in Skyline Melodies, while still in high school. The same year, Nancy began to perform in nightclubs. Nancy graduated high school at the age of 17 and then attended Ohio's Central State College, now Central State University for a whole year. Then she dropped out to pursue a career as a professional musician. The first album she recorded was in 1956 by Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band. They toured with her from 1956-1958. Nancy released her debut recording via Dot Records during the time she was with the group. Cannonball advised her to move to New York and go to The Big Town for the rest of her career. In less than a month she began singing at The Blue Morocco Night Club which is located at Boston Road near The Bronx. Adderley's representative saw her singing and instantly signed her. In 1960, he signed her to Capitol Records. That same year she released her debut single. Guess Who Saw Today. Capitol released 5 Nancy Wilson Albums in 2 years. Adderley helped her move away from R&B and to focus on music that was more jazz-based and torch songs. Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley's collaboration in the year 1962 helped propel her into the spotlight and her hit Tell Me the Truth was made available in the year 1963.
