Nancy Wilson (jazz singer) was born to Olden Wilson, an ironworker in Chillicothe on the 20th of February, 1937. The mother of her child, Lillian Ryan worked as household helper. Nancy was the eldest of six kids. Nancy's father was an avid music lover and played records in the family. This had a great influence on her as a child. It was clear that she wanted to become a performer at the age of four years old and developed her talents by participating in the church choir. In high school, she began to appear regularly on Skyline Melodies. She was fifteen when she won the television talent show. The nightclubs where she was a regular performer, she began singing at the age of 15. Nancy was just 17 at the time she completed high school. After matriculating at Ohio Central State College - which is now Central State University - for only one semester Nancy went on to become professional performers. In 1956 she released her debut album in Rusty Bryant's Carolyn Club Big Band with who she performed on tour between 1956 and 1958. Nancy made her debut album via Dot Records during the time she was with the group. Cannonball Aderley suggested that she relocate to New York so as to enhance her career. In 1959, Nancy moved to The Big Town. In less than a month she began singing at The Blue Morocco Night Club which is located at Boston Road near The Bronx. A representative from Adderley's company saw her singing and instantly took her on. The contract was signed with Capitol Records in the year 1960. she debuted the following year with the single. Initially focusing on blues and rhythm under Adderley's influence, she began to move away from R&B as she embraced the torch and jazz genres. Nancy Wilson, Cannonball Adderley together with their 1962 group led her to the top of the charts. Her breakthrough hit Tell Me the Truth by 1963. Her first job was at New York's Coconut Grove nightclub, America's premier nightclub.
